How much of your time do you spend comparing yourself to others?
When you compare yourself to others you’re comparing your weaknesses with someone else’s strengths, which can create feelings of insecurity and of course you’ll end up fighting a losing battle.
Let’s do some maths on the assumption that you spend an hour a day comparing yourself to others. That’s 7 hours a week, 30 hours a month and a whooping 364 hours a year, which equates to 15 days of your life comparing yourself to others!!!
That is one crazy stat right there.
Just think, what would you rather spend those 15 days on. Becoming a better assistant, investing in building your side hustle, focusing on your self care? You could even take a two week holiday in the Bahamas 🏝
I get it though. When I first started out in business I suffered terribly from comparisonitis (is that even a word?!). I found myself focusing on what other business owners were achieving; how many clients, speaking gigs and social media followers they had. I’m surprised I didn’t give myself a hernia stressing out about all this stuff. All things I couldn’t control and that had absolutely nothing to do with me I might add.
I realised I needed to get back into my own lane and accept that my journey was different to others. No one had the same life experience as I’d had and besides that I was comparing myself with business owners who were years ahead of me.
It’s time for you to get off the struggle train, get back in your own lane and realise how freaking amazing you actually are. There is no one in the world like you, absolutely no one, which makes you pretty special in my books.
As Theordore Roosevelt says, ‘comparison is the thief of joy’ so let’s look at how you can get back in your own lane and stop comparing yourself to others.
Focus on your strengths - Focus on all the strengths that you possess. Get them out of your head and onto paper. Ask your friends and family to share with you all the awesome things they love about you. Still need to compare yourself? No, I didn’t think so.
Practice gratitude - By creating a daily gratitude ritual you can bring your focus back to yourself. This will help you recognise how much you have to be grateful for in your life and you’ll no longer feel the need to compare yourself to others.
Let go of perfectionism - Recognise that you are enough just as you are. Life is full of new learnings. You don’t need to know everything now, run with what you’ve got and build on your knowledge as you go. Done is better than perfect.
When you shift your mindset from focusing on others and what you perceive them to be, do or have and bring your focus back to yourself you’ll become more aware of all the wonderful opportunities you have in your life.
The only person you need to compare yourself to is yesterday’s version of who you were. Look back at how far you’ve come, be proud of your achievements and focus on your growth and learning.
